Expert Reviews on Perumpalam
A small inhabited island in the Vembanad lake which is cut off completely from the mainland. With no road access, the island is linked to Kochi and Alappuzha by two jhankar services, which is the lifeline to the island ferrying small trucks, cars, two wheelers and people. The island has a bank (SBI), Post Office, ATM, BSNL office, hospital and school. Boat services are still the main link within the island and to the mainland. It was mostly mud roads, but tarred and surfaced roads are now becoming common.
The major occupation of the island was fishing. There are several peeling sheds where shrimp, prawns, lobsters are peeled frozen and despatched to export houses on the mainland. Couple of prawn farms where prawns are cultivated are still in existence. Government promoted fish farming in nets are also common. Small canoes of fishermen are visible on the backwaters, day and night.
Perumpalam is also called the island of temples, with 52 temples dotting the small pocket of land. There are couple of mosques and churches on the island. As soon as you board the jhankar, you are leaving behind the hustle and bustle of 21st century India and moving into slow pace rural Kerala - slow, peaceful and tranquil. It's not just physical journey, but a journey in time. Moving back some 3-4 decades in time.
Pros:
- An idyllic place to find your inner self
- Slow paced life motor boats with very few automobiles
- A breath of fresh air in this polluted earth
Cons:
- No fancy hotels for dining out
- Minimal medical facilities
- Loud temple music through festival season
