As the nation fights the COVID-19 pandemic, we begin with a message of precaution to stay safe and protected by following these three simple steps – Wear a face mask. Maintain Do Gaz Ki Doori for social distancing. Focus on hand and face hygiene. Nation is celebrating its 72nd Republic Day today. The main function was held at Rajpath in the National Capital where President Ram Nath Kovind took the salute of the parade. India’s military might, cultural diversity, social and economic progress were on display during the Republic Day celebrations at the majestic Rajpath. Thirty-two tableaux, 17 from States and Union Territories, nine from various Ministries or Departments and Paramilitary Forces and six from Ministry of Defence were rolled down the Rajpath. Some of the highlights of the tablaux were Vision’for Carbon neutral Ladakh, Sun Temple of Modhera, Gujarat, Tea-tribes of Assam, Splendorous Sounds of Chhattisgarh’s Folk Music, Coir of Kerala, Digital Bharat, Four Labour Codes, Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, New India: ‘Vocal for Local’, CRPF and BRO. School children performed Bajasal Dance of Odisha, Tamil Nadu Folk Dance, and theme dances on Hum Fit Toh India Fit and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Rafale fighter jets, which were inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) last year, featured in the Republic Day parade and culminated the flypast by carrying out the 'Vertical Charlie' formation. A Rafale jet with two Jaguar Deep penetration strike aircraft and two MiG-29 Air Superiority Fighters conducted the "Eklavya" formation at a height of 300 m and a speed of 780 km/h. The parade culminated with a single Rafale aircraft flying at a speed of 900km/hr carrying out a 'Vertical Charlie'. Five Rafale fighter planes were formally inducted into the IAF in September last year. A total of 38 Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft participated in the flypast this year. The ‘Trinetra’ formation comprising of three Su-30MKIs - the three aircraft split outwards and upwards, forming a ‘Trishul in the Sky’ enthralled the audience. During the function, indigenously-developed Main Battle Tank of the Indian Army, T-90 Bhishma, Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP II, Brahmos Weapon System, Pinaka Bridge Laying tanks T-72, Samvijay Electronic Warfare System were the main attraction in the mechanised columns. Naval Tableau titled Swarnim Vijay Varsh showcased the Indian Navy’s attack on Karachi harbour in 1971. A 122-member proud contingent of the Bangladesh armed forces also marched on Rajpath. This morning, the Republic Day Parade ceremony started with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National War Memorial where he led the nation in paying solemn tributes to the fallen heroes by laying a wreath. The National Flag was unfurled followed by the National Anthem with a booming 21-gun salute. The parade commenced with President Ram Nath Kovind taking the salute. This time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the parade route has been shortened. The parade started from Vijay Chowk, as usual, but culminated at the National Stadium instead of ending at the Red Fort. Only around 25 thousand spectators were allowed to witness the parade as compared to the average of 1.15 lakh people every year. Children below 15 years and the elderly with co-morbidities were not permitted. This year, there was no Chief Guest from Foreign country due to the pandemic. The event was held following all necessary Covid -19 preventive protocols. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has greeted the countrymen on the 72nd Republic Day. In a tweet, Mr Naidu called upon people to devote to ideals like freedom, equality, fraternity and justice to all which are enshrined in the Constitution. He urged people to renew the pledge to civilizational ideals and and Constitutional values and dedicate to build an inclusive, peaceful, harmonious and progressive India. He said, citizens should reaffirm their commitment towards the Constitution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the people on the occasion of Republic Day. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah have also greeted the citizens on the occasion. Home Minister Amit Shah has said that Republic Day is a symbol of India’s multicolored diversity and rich cultural heritage. In a tweet, Mr Shah remembered all the great personalities due to whose struggle the Constitution came into effect on this day in 1950. He saluted the brave men who have protected the Indian Republic with their valor. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has greeted people of India on the occasion of Republic Day. In video message, he said UK and India are working side by side to free humanity from the coronavirus pandemic. Mr Johnson was due to be in New Delhi as the chief guest at the republic day parade but had to call off the visit following the outbreak of a new deadlier variant of coronavirus in the UK. In his message, the UK PM reiterated his plan to visit India in the coming months. The President has approved awards of 455 Gallantry and other Defence decorations to Armed Forces personnel and others. These include one Mahavir Chakra, 5 Kirti Chakras, 5 Vir Chakras, 7 Shaurya Chakras, 4 Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 130 Sena Medal (Gallantry), one Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry), 4 Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry), 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medal, 4 Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, 51 Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, 11 Yudh Seva Medal, 3 Bar to Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 43 Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty) including 2 COVID Warriors, 8 Nao Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 14 Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty), 3 Bar to Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) including one COVID Warrior and 131 Vishisht Seva Medal including 12 COVID Warriors. Colonel B Santosh Babu, the Commanding Officer of 16 Bihar Regiment, who lost his life during the Galwan Valley clash last year, will be posthumously awarded with Maha Vir Chakra. Subedar Sanjiv Kumar of 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment, CRPF Inspector Pintu Kumar Singh, CRPF Head Constable Shyam Narayan Singh Yadav, CRPF Constable Vinod Kumar will be posthumously awarded with Kirti Chakra. Deputy Commandant CRPF Rahul Mathur will be awarded Kirti Chakra. Naib Subedar Nuduram Soren of 16 Bihar Regiment, Havildar K Palani of 81 Field Regiment, Naik Deepak Singh of Army Medical Corps 16 Bihar Regiment and Sepoy Gurtej Singh of 3rd Battalion Punjab Regiment will be awarded Vir Chakra posthumously. Havildar Tejinder Singh of 3 Medium Regiment will be awarded Vir Chakra. Major Anuj Sood of 21st Battalion Rashtriya Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir police inspector Arshad Khan, J&K police Selection Grade Constable GH Mustafa Barah, J&K police Constable Naseer Ahmed Kolie and J&K Special Police Officer Bilal Ahmed Magray will be posthumously awarded with Shaurya Chakra. Rifleman Pranab Jyoti Das of 6th Battalion Assam Rifles and Paratrooper Sonam Tshering Tamang will be awarded Shaurya Chakra. The Government has announced Padma Awards on the occasion of Republic Day. Seven persons will get Padma Vibhushan. They include former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo and Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan. Eminent Singer late S P Balasubramaniam will be awarded the 2nd highest civilian award posthumously. Ten persons will get Padma Bhushan. They include former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Singer K S Chithra, prominent poet Chandrashekhara Kambara and retired Civil Servant Nripendra Misra. Former Gujarat Chief Minister late Keshubhai Patel, Former Assam Chief Minister late Tarun Gogoi and Former Union Minister late Ram Vilas Paswan will be honoured with Padma Bhushan posthumously. 102 persons will get Padma Shri. They include Social Worker Sindutai Sapkal, Musician Bombay Jayashri, British film director Peter Brook and Greek Indologist Nicholas Kazanas. Former Governor of Goa late Mridula Sinha, Spanish-Indian Jesuit priest and author late Father Vallés will be given the award posthumously. The list includes many unsung heros of the country. In Kashmir Valley, the 72nd Republic Day was celebrated peacefully amid tight security and high vigil. The largest event was held at Srinagar’s Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, where Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Baseer Khan, was the chief guest and took salute of the ceremonial march past. Farmers have defied the conditions set by the Delhi Police for the tractor rally and have started their rally two hours ahead of scheduled time leading to chaos and clashes with cops at many places in the National Capital Region. Our Correspondent reports that farmers have deviated from the route for the tractor rally set by the Delhi Police, breaching barricades and clashing on with the police in the national capital. The Police used tear gas shells to disperse the protesting farmers at ITO in central Delhi. Delhi Police today appealed to the protesting farmers to maintain peace. A senior official of Delhi Police urged them to not take law in their hands. This came as protesting farmers have deviated from the route for the tractor rally set by the Delhi police. There are also reports of violence by them in some parts of the national capital. In view of farmers' protest and security reasons, several metro stations in the national capital have been closed. Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has conducted the successful maiden launch of Akash-NG (New Generation) Missile from Integrated Test Range off the coast of Odisha yesterday. Akash-NG is a new generation Surface to Air Missile meant for use by Indian Air Force with an aim of intercepting high maneuvering low RCS aerial threats. Ministry of Defence said that the missile intercepted the target with text book precision. The launch met all the test objectives by performing high maneuvers during the trajectory. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the scientists from DRDO, BEL and team from Indian Air Force for this achievement.
