Bridge No. 4 or "Char number pool" as it is known popularly in Hindi and Bengali, was built as an overhead bridge across the Circular Railway tracks, adjacent to Park Circus station. The bridge serves as an arterial connection between central Calcutta and Science City / Salt Lake areas. Also, all vehicles going towards the airport from central Calcutta take this bridge on their way to the E. M. Bypass. Due to the volume of traffic, jams are common. Buses plying on dozens of routes, private cars, taxis and trucks take this bridge everyday in both directions. There was a row of shanties along the northern side of the bridge till 2013, but they were cleared to make way for the Park Circus - Parama Island elevated corridor. This corridor runs parallel to Bridge No. 4 and in fact partially covers the northern flank, stressing the importance of the route from Park Circus to Science City / Parama Island these days.
The area surrounding Bridge No. 4 is primarily residential, but there are a number of small enterprises all around as well, ranging from barber shops to tow truckers to tailor shops to opticians and paint shops. The population living in the vicinity of the bridge is a cosmopolitan mix of Urdu / Hindi and Bengali speakers, with a large proportion tracing their roots back to Bihar.
